VEGESORB
Sorbolenes are the biggest selling skin care products in Australian pharmacies.
Sorbolenes may appear to be great value-for-money, at around only $3.95 for 100g to I litre, however many consumers do not realise that traditional sorbolenes are based on petrochemical by-products, such as mineral oil and paraffin, and were primarily designed to act as barrier creams.
The high oil content (40-60%), molecular size, strong water repellant properties and non-biodegradability of mineral oil molecules means that sorbolenes are not readily absorbed into the skin, nor do they contain suitable skin-compatible nutrients.
Sorbolenes may be recommended by health professionals as an economical “moisturiser” for those suffering from a variety of skin conditions, particularly where other products are not well tolerated. Upon application, sorbolene soothes the skin and forms a physical barrier to protect against moisture loss.
However, this barrier is temporary and can be washed or rubbed away, leaving the skin no better than before. It has, in fact been suggested that prolonged use of an artificial barrier like sorbolene, may contribute to the break-down of the skin’s normal barrier functions, resulting in increased susceptibility to irritation and dryness.
Vegesorb compared to traditional sorbolene
Many have found by changing from ordinary sorbolenes to Vegesorb, their dry skin has been improved simply by providing adequate skin-compatible oils and water.
